The Rioja appellation region of production stretches over the three provinces crossed by the
higher reaches of the River Ebro: La Rioja, Alava and Navarra. The whole area enjoys the two very different influences of the Atlantic and Mediterranean which bring mild temperatures and annual rainfall of over 400 l/m2 –ideal conditions for vine-growing.
The grape varieties currently authorised in the regulations of the Rioja appellation are: for
red wines, Tempranillo, renache, Graciano, Mazuelo (Carignan) and Red Maturana. For whites, Viura (Macabeo), Malvasía, White Grenache, White Tempranillo White Maturana, Torrontes, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo.
